David is the owner and head coach of Contemporary Athlete. He has been a competitive athlete for as long as he has had the ability. Due to a car accident in 2005 though, trying to rediscover that passion as an athlete is part of what helped him decide to open the CA. Supporting others who have a fantastic work ethic is what ultimately encouraged him to open Contemporary Athlete.

David has always been one to lead by example. His days as a collegiate athlete were spent as a Division 1 springboard and platform diver for Southern Methodist University. After retiring from diving, he has gone on to run marathons, both traditional and ultra distances, numerous trail races, and competed as a lightweight rower for Argonaut Rowing Club based in Canada.

When he isn’t empowering others to become their best, Dave can be found outdoors enjoying all that is offered there, usually in a training endeavor or in his art studio sculpting or drawing.

Dave holds a number of certifications as a coach and trainer, as the industry changes so does the education.

Kyla Scherer is an animal-loving, weight lifting, fitness instructor and mom to two girls. She’s never been a fancy division 1 athlete but she’s participated in softball, volleyball, rowing, and various other athletic endeavors since she was young. She has always enjoyed the camaraderie of a team and the strength of the human spirit to overcome challenges.

As a mom, Kyla understands no one achieves their goals alone. The hands that have helped and inspired her are many. She hopes to re-pay that to the world by empowering others – mostly through sweat and hard-work.

When she’s not helping others, she’s playing volleyball or softball, chasing down her kids, making her way through a mud run, dead lifting, or planning an escape with her husband.

Kyla is a DMS - Level 1 Coach, ACSM certified personal trainer, and an ACE certified group fitness instructor. Continuing education is extremely important to all members of the CA team, so any other crazy certifications that Dave may throw her way are next on the list.

The newest member of the CA Coaching Team, Ian has a passion for helping others achieve their goals. He is a graduate of Plattsburgh State University with a degree in Fitness and Wellness Leadership, where he worked as a supervisor and personal trainer in the Fitness Center, and taught mobility as an instructor for the group exercise program. At Plattsburgh he played soccer player for one season as a member of the 2013 SUNYAC championship team, after which he moved on to running and sprinting for the track and field team.

Ian has a hunger for improved performance. Whether it was completing CA’s Alpha Challenge, hitting PR’s, or mastering new movements, hard work and consistency are two values he knows will translate into your progress and success. He believes that what you do in the gym should enhance your life outside of it. This could mean becoming more successful in competition or productive at your job, healthier for yourself and family, and the confidence from knowing you’re stronger than you were before.

When he isn’t helping others to become greater versions of themselves, Ian enjoys reading, hiking, biking, and spending time outdoors. Ian is an ACSM certified personal trainer, and currently working towards becoming an NSCA certified strength and conditioning specialist.
